The Thermal research group of Mechanical Engineering Department is working on areas of cutting edge research and development. The focus of group is on scientific innovation in areas related to improving efficiency and compactness of the thermal systems. The research topics are closely linked to our teaching groups, with both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes shaped to reflect the research strengths of our faculty. The brief description on notable research works pursuing in the department are follows: (a) Enhancement of Thermal performance of heat exchanger using passive techniques (b) Performance assessment of roughened Solar air heater (c) Study of Plate fin and pin fin heat sink under forced and natural convection (d) Study of boiling heat transfer over modified surfaces

The materials research group of our department is working in the areas of composites and welding. The work mainly consist of analysis and fabrication of new materials and exploring their applications. It is an initiative to contribute towards developing high strength low weight materials: (a) Fabrication and testing of composites made of plies. (b) Buckling and vibration analysis of composite laminated plates (c) Friction stir welding of aluminum (d) Development and analysis of environment friendly NAO composites (e) Biodegradable non-woven composites (f) Electric Discharge machining through Sintered electrodes

The research in materials & manufacturing engineering is focused on various areas like Advanced & Sustainable Machining of hard and difficult to cut materials, Machining using advanced coated cutting inserts, Applications of different nano fluids in machining, Cryogenic treatment of cutting inserts for hard machining, Optimization and Modelling of manufacturing processes., Mechanical, metallurgical and microstructural assessment of various types welded joints, Fabrication of various types of composites, Study the thermal, mechanical and tribological characteristics of various composites, Development of self-healing materials and Non-conventional machining of various materials.

Electro Discharge Machining Center (EDM)

Electro Discharge Machining Center (EDM)

Electric Discharge Machining Laboratory caters to the need of experimentation for the B.Tech/M.Tech/PhD students to understand the need of unconventional machining process, working mechanism of the EDM process and the applications of the process. This lab provides the research facility for modern engineering materials that are deployed in extreme conditions are often shaped or manufactured by EDM process with accuracy of 0.001 mm.

CNC Turning centre understand the need of conventional machining process, working mechanism of longitudinal turning process and the applications of the process. This lab provides the research facility for the machining of various advanced materials such as heat resistant alloys, hard materials, composites, high entropy alloys, aluminium alloys etc. These materials are employed in various industries such as, aerospace, marine, automobiles, medical, tool and die making industries. This machine is capable to handle both solid and hollow thin cylindrical objects. Intricate machine parts such as cylindrical flange, nozzles, hydraulic fittings and hub adapter can be easily manufactured with good accuracy using this machine tool. Moreover, machining of various materials can be accomplished in different machining environments using this machine.

Multi Tubular Sensible Heat Storage System Fitted With Wire Coil Inserts.

The literature concerning energy storage by sensible energy storage systems shows several distinct geometries and materials employed for different applications. The energy storage/release strongly depends on the penetration of heat in the entire volume of the bed which is affected by the fluid supply and flow characteristics in the storage system. Multiple cylindrical passages embedded in the concrete bed appear to be an effective design for achieving a faster thermal response. Based on this observation, the present study experimentally investigates the thermal characteristics of sensible energy storage having cylinder-shaped multiple passages for charging and discharging cycles.
